What is Skin Cancer?

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the out-of-control growth of abnormal cells in the epidermis, the outermost skin layer, caused by unrepaired DNA damage that triggers mutations. The mutations that occur in the skin can lead to having tumors.

The main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). The leading cause of skin cancer is the ultraviolet rays from the sun. Going outside unprotected and excessive use of tanning machines can increase the chance of having this disease.

The most common symptom of having skin cancer is the change of skin. There might be new growth, a new mole, or a sore that does not heal when you have skin cancer. More and more moles can occur as your condition worsens. When you notice that there have been changes in your moles, you should never hesitate to contact your doctor.

To protect yourself from UV rays, it is essential to know that UV radiation does not only come in summer but throughout the entire year. You can still get exposed to UV radiation even if the weather is cloudy and hazy days. It would be best if you also kept in mind that UV rays can reflect on natural elements such as water, snow, or sand.

Sunlight contains Vitamin D, which has tremendous benefits for the skin if you go outside early in the morning. Going out unprotected from the sun exposure from 10 am to 4 pm can be dangerous as it is known that these are the times when UV exposure is the harshest.

How can you Protect your Family from Skin Cancer?

To protect your family from skin cancer, you should always go to shaded areas whenever you are going outdoors, especially during midday hours. Always bring an umbrella with you, and if you are going to the beach, never forget to apply sunblock on your skin.

  1. I’m glad you mentioned having window tint to avoid getting skin cancer. My brother just learned he has skin cancer and we’re trying to find a good treatment center to help get rid of it. We’ll have to research different treatment options that are the safest.
